translations 03 …… the making of

in search of that certain something

Weeks have passed and we are still struggling with our concept … because we don’t have any! We bought a lot of stuff burned it, dropped it into water, piled it, mixed it, … just to see what happens and if we get inspired somehow. It was hella fun doing this and we had our “oohs-” and “aahs-” moments for sure … but we have no clue what to do with them …

brainstorming … what is an authorship in design?

It all started with a chaotic scenario of brainstorming, defining the phrase authorship in design. At the end we found five different kind of authors in design:

1. the meaningful teller (der sinnstiftender Erzähler)

2. the visual researcher (der visueller Forscher)

3. the developer of mulitmedia-based tools (der Entwickler multimedialer Werkzeuge)

4. the design theoretical reflecting author (der designtheoretisch reflektierender Autor)

5. the social critic (der Gesellschaftskritiker)

the mission

On the 20. – 21. November 2009 the faculty of design of the University of Applied Sciences Mainz have their third international translations symposium which is concerned with the self image of the communication designer and his role in society. So the translations 03 is all about authorship in design.

In summer 2009 we participated on a seminar where design students were searching and designing the graphical appearance of our third translations symposium. We decided to create this blog to record the process of our ideas and our designs.
